Tulsi Gabbard to visit Rutherford County for book tour
The Rutherford County GOP asks attendees to RSVP for Saturday's event
The Rutherford County Republican Party has announced that Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democratic congresswoman and 2020 presidential candidate, will be making a stop in Forest City on Saturday, April 20, 2024, as part of her book tour promoting "For Love of Country: Leave the Democrat Party Behind."
The event is scheduled to take place at @138 Park Square, Forest City, NC, with doors opening at 10:30 a.m. and Gabbard's address slated for 11:00 a.m. Following her speech, there will be a book signing session along with opportunities for attendees to take photos with the author.
Tulsi Gabbard's decision to visit Rutherford County is seen as significant, as it underscores her message of reaching across party lines and appealing to a broader audience. Her book is described as a personal account of her journey from being a rising star in the Democratic Party to her decision to leave due to what she perceives as growing "wokeness," racism, and intolerance within the party. As an independent voice now, Gabbard calls for unity among Americans who prioritize peace, freedom, and love for their country. “I answered the call to serve and swore an oath, dedicating my life to supporting and defending the Constitution, both in uniform and in public office. I have always been an independent-minded person but became a Democrat when I first ran for office because I saw a party that stood up for the little guy, free speech and civil liberties. That party is no more," she said in a release.
Tulsi Gabbard's extensive background includes four terms as a congresswoman, a stint as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, and a 2020 presidential candidacy. Her military service, including multiple deployments to war zones in the Middle East and Africa, has shaped her perspective on foreign policy and national security issues.
The event in Forest City provides an opportunity for residents of Rutherford County and beyond to engage with Gabbard's ideas and perspectives firsthand. It also serves as a platform for discussion on the future of American politics and the role of bipartisanship in addressing the country's challenges. Cops & Congress commentary: Could Tulsi Gabbard be Trump’s VP pick?
While anything is possible in politics, it's important to consider several factors when speculating about Tulsi Gabbard's potential as a vice presidential candidate. Since Gabbard’s CPAC appearance, she has been seen as being on Donald Trump’s short list for VP. They have had a somewhat complex relationship, characterized by occasional moments of agreement on certain policy issues despite their differing political ideologies.
During her tenure in Congress and her presidential campaign in 2020, Gabbard often positioned herself as an anti-establishment figure within the Democratic Party, advocating for a non-interventionist foreign policy and criticizing what she perceived as the party's hawkish tendencies. This stance occasionally led her to express views that aligned with some of Trump's positions, particularly on matters related to military interventionism and foreign policy.
One notable instance of apparent alignment occurred in 2017 when Gabbard met with then-President-elect Trump to discuss Syria and her opposition to U.S. intervention in the country's civil war. While the meeting was criticized by some Democrats, it highlighted Gabbard's willingness to engage with members of the opposing party and her divergence from mainstream Democratic foreign policy positions.
Despite occasional moments of agreement, Gabbard and Trump have also been at odds on numerous issues, particularly regarding domestic policy and social issues. Gabbard has been critical of Trump's immigration policies, his approach to healthcare reform, and his rhetoric on issues such as race and religion.
Overall, while Gabbard and Trump have found common ground on select policy matters, their relationship has been characterized by a mix of cooperation and disagreement, reflecting the broader political landscape of bipartisan collaboration on some issues while remaining sharply divided on others.
The selection of a vice presidential candidate is often influenced by strategic considerations, such as balancing the ticket geographically, ideologically, or demographically, as well as considerations of political experience and electoral appeal. While Gabbard's military service and congressional experience may make her an attractive candidate in some respects, her departure from the Democratic Party and the controversies surrounding her past positions could make her a risky choice for a major party ticket.
Ultimately, while Gabbard's political journey and background make her an intriguing figure in American politics, the likelihood of her being chosen as a vice presidential candidate would depend on a variety of factors, including the political landscape at the time of the selection and the strategic calculations of the party making the decision. Time will tell if Trump chooses her to join him on the Republican party ticket for the November election.
