RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. — At the Oct. 6 meeting of the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners, the mood shifted from procedural to urgent as leaders confronted ongoing FEMA reimbursement delays, economic fallout from Hurricane Helene, and the disappearance of mainstream media local news coverage.

The meeting, which included presentations from the county’s finance director, the Tourism Development Authority (TDA), and architects and planning personnel, highlighted both challenges and the passage of the emergency management hazard mitigation plan for the South Mountains region.
