Multi-agency police chase ends in arrest of armed suspect and passenger after shots fired at school bus
Cleveland County and surrounding law enforcement agencies collaborated to capture suspects following a high-speed pursuit
On the evening of June 19, 2024, a high-speed chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies culminated in the arrest of a suspect who had fired shots at both deputies and an occupied school bus. The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, pursued the vehicle as it sped through the county, with the driver, Jeremy Aaron Huffman, firing at deputies from Lincoln County. The chase escalated when Huffman shot at a school bus traveling down Highway 226 near Shelby.
Deputies employed stop sticks to halt the vehicle, but Huffman continued evading capture until he crashed into an embankment at Highway 74 and NC 226 (Polkville Rd). Following the crash, Huffman fled on foot into the nearby woods, continuing to shoot at officers.
His passenger, Jennifer Lynn Hughes, was apprehended at the scene.
As the situation unfolded, multiple agencies including the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Shelby Police Department (SPD), North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) set up a perimeter to contain the suspect. A search involving K-9 units from the York County Sheriff’s Office and a helicopter from the NCSHP Air Unit was initiated but later scaled back due to nightfall.
Early the next morning, a sighting of Huffman near the Days Inn on Highway 74 prompted a renewed search effort. Law enforcement officers established another perimeter and, after a brief foot chase, captured Huffman as he attempted to cross Highway 74 toward E. Marion Street. A 9mm handgun was recovered from the area where he was apprehended.
The cooperative effort of the involved agencies led to the successful apprehension of Jeremy Aaron Huffman and Jennifer Lynn Hughes. Huffman faces multiple charges, including five counts of attempted first-degree murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, felony flee to elude, and felony larceny, among others. Hughes faces charges including possession of a firearm by a felon, felony obstruction, and possession of a controlled substance.
Huffman is being held in the Cleveland County Detention Center without bond for the local charges and has a $10,000 bond for charges in Catawba County. Lincoln County authorities are also preparing charges against him. Hughes has a $50,000 bond for Cleveland County charges and additional bonds totaling $3,500 for charges in Catawba and Caldwell counties, with Lincoln County charges pending.
Sheriff Alan Norman praised the collaborative effort, emphasizing the danger posed by the suspects, particularly noting their reckless disregard for safety by shooting at an occupied school bus.
"This incident underscores the critical importance of multi-agency collaboration in apprehending dangerous individuals and maintaining public safety," Sheriff Norman said.
The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that they remain committed to ensuring the safety of the community and appreciates the public's cooperation and patience during the search.
Cops and Congress commentary on running from the police in North Carolina:
Severe Legal Consequences:
In North Carolina, fleeing from the police can result in serious felony charges, including felony flee to elude arrest and resisting arrest. Police pursuits can also be deadly. These charges carry substantial penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and hefty fines.
Increased Risk of Violence:
High-speed chases and attempts to evade law enforcement significantly increase the risk of violence and injury to both the suspect and the public. The recent incident where shots were fired at deputies and an occupied school bus highlights the potential for tragic outcomes.
Endangerment of Innocent Lives:
Running from the police endangers not only the suspect and law enforcement officers but also innocent bystanders. The incident on June 19, where a school bus was targeted, underscores the reckless endangerment of children and other civilians.
Resource Intensive:
Pursuits and subsequent manhunts consume considerable law enforcement resources, including personnel from multiple agencies, K-9 units, and air support. This diverts critical resources from other community safety needs and increases the operational burden on police departments.
Legislative and Community Response:
There is a need for ongoing legislative support to enhance penalties for fleeing law enforcement and to provide resources for better training and equipment for police. Community outreach and education about the dangers and consequences of running from the police can also play a crucial role in prevention.
