The 2025 Booze It & Lose It campaign, "Operation Firecracker," is being held across North Carolina through July 6. “During this time, deputies with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office (R.C.S.O.) will join law enforcement agencies across the state to make our roads safer by increasing patrols throughout the county to identify and apprehend impaired drivers,” Sheriff Aaron Ellenburg said. “The goal of this campaign is to prevent alcohol-related crashes and ensure a safe holiday for everyone. Please celebrate responsibly and make smart choices to keep yourself, your family, and everyone else on our roads safe.”
The RCSO shared these safety tips:
Don't drink and drive – use a designated driver, ride-sharing services, or other safe transportation options.
Report impaired drivers – contact law enforcement immediately if you see suspicious or dangerous driving.
As fireworks season kicks off, the Asheville Police Department shared information about “permissible fireworks in North Carolina.”
These include sparklers, fountains, and novelty fireworks that do not detonate, explode, spin, are hand-held, or ground-based, and do not leave the ground.
Firecrackers, ground spinners, roman candles, and rockets (including bottle rockets) are prohibited by state law and can be dangerous.

Cops & Congress commentary: Top Four Reasons Government Should Sponsor Fireworks and Festivities
As citizens, we pay taxes, and in return, we expect our government to uphold and honor the traditions that unite us. Here are the top four reasons why the government should sponsor fireworks and festivities.
1. Fostering Community Spirit and Unity
Government-sponsored events provide an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate. Fireworks displays, parades, and public festivities create a shared experience that fosters a sense of unity and belonging. These events are inclusive, allowing people from all walks of life to participate, which strengthens community bonds.
2. Honoring Historical Significance
Public celebrations often commemorate significant historical events. By sponsoring these events, the government acknowledges and honors the history and sacrifices that have shaped our nation. Fireworks on the Fourth of July, for example, are a tribute to our country’s independence and the enduring spirit of freedom. These celebrations serve as a reminder of our shared heritage and the values we hold dear.
3. Boosting Local Economies
Festivities attract visitors, boosting local businesses and economies. Vendors, restaurants, and hotels benefit from the influx of people, generating revenue and creating jobs. Government sponsorship ensures these events are well-organized and adequately funded, maximizing their positive economic impact. In many cases, the economic benefits far outweigh the costs of hosting these events.
4. Promoting Civic Pride and Engagement
When the government invests in public celebrations, it demonstrates a commitment to civic pride and engagement. These events offer a platform for local officials to engage with constituents, fostering a sense of transparency and accountability. Citizens are more likely to take pride in their community and participate in civic activities when they see their government investing in the cultural and social fabric of society. Charging fees creates a barrier to participation, reducing civic engagement and the sense of pride these events foster.
