Exclusive: Court documents shine a light on Thermal Belt Rail Trail shooting suspect

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office detention center records show Laquan Lee Logan, 29, a convicted felon, was arrested for multiple charges recently. Court records obtained by Cops & Congress show he was first charged with multiple drug offenses, then later, with first-degree attempted murder of his uncle. I was the first journalist to report about the arrest (read the full thread on X, formerly Twitter).
Rutherfordton Police Chief Clint Ingle released limited information following the incident, but expressed gratitude to the Spindale police department, Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, and other assisting agencies for their efforts. However, amidst the commendations, concerns emerged regarding the need for greater transparency from the Rutherfordton police department. As Chief Ingle clarified that the incident stemmed from a family dispute rather than a random act of violence, community members emphasized the importance of understanding the context and circumstances surrounding such incidents. My public records request for the incident report has not been fulfilled. To date, the RPD has not publicly released the suspect’s name, as I previously reported.
