N.C. House Panel Hears Emergency Physicians’ Warning on IVC Pressures, Emergency Department Challenges and Risks for Police, Hospitals
RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina lawmakers examining the state’s involuntary commitment system heard stark commentary from an emergency physician who said hospital emergency departments are overwhelmed by behavioral health cases — and are not the appropriate destination for new judicial evaluations that will be required under HB 307, Iryna’s Law.
The House Select Committee on Involuntary Commitment and Public Safety held its first hearing as it continues a months-long review of mental health statutes, law enforcement responsibilities, and hospital capacity. The committee was formed in the aftermath of the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska and amid bipartisan concern about rising violence in hospitals and a strained crisis response network.
