Narcotics Detective Hunter Haynes seeks dual role as cop and Commissioner
Challenging the status quo, Haynes aims to balance law enforcement duties with county governance to bring a fresh perspective and synergy to local politics.

In a surprising twist in Rutherford County politics, Hunter Haynes, a 29-year-old married Narcotics Detective, recently promoted from Deputy Sheriff, is making headlines by running for County Commissioner. Haynes won the March Republican primary election to unseat Commissioner David Hunt. He also intends to continue his role in law enforcement following the election.
Haynes does not have a Democrat opponent on the November ballot. Nor does the other county commissioner-elect, Donnie Haulk. Haulk won the election against Greg Lovelace. Both men will join the three other Rutherford County Commissioners to be sworn in this December.
Haynes' decision to run for office stems from his deep-rooted commitment to the community and his firsthand experiences in law enforcement. He also brings a younger perspective to the role. I asked him about his thoughts on how national politics are affecting Rutherford County. "I think that Biden dropping out of the race was responsible on his part. He was obviously aware that he was no longer capable of carrying out presidential duties. I do think that his announcement should have been made sooner. I believe that most Democrats were aware of this as well, which may have deterred them from voting. Kamala’s announcement that she is running for president has sparked a lot of fresh interest in the Democratic Party, which will, in turn, increase voter turnout," Haynes said.
Haynes has family law enforcement ties and a unique view of the dangers of the job of a police officer. He has connections to two of the deadliest law enforcement events in Rutherford County history. His great-grandfather was Damon Huskey, who served as Rutherford County Sheriff from 1974-1986. His great uncle, Captain Roy Huskey, was killed on May 31, 1979, in Gilkey along with Deputy Owen Messersmith and North Carolina Trooper Robert "Pete" Peterson. James Hutchins was executed in 1984 after being found guilty of the murders.
In January 2022, Haynes was one of the first deputies on the scene of the car crash that killed North Carolina State Highway Patrol Officer John Horton and drove Horton’s wife to the hospital.
Haynes' bid to serve both as a cop and a commissioner has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest. However, he said that his dual roles offer a unique advantage. It’s also allowed under NC state law. "It’s more important now than ever that Republicans keep the same momentum that we’ve had throughout this election season. We need to focus on educating registered voters on the importance of going to the polls on Election Day. During my (primary) campaign for county commissioner, it became extremely evident to me that people within my generation are not aware of the importance of voting. It’s time that all generations take back control of this country, and that starts with voting," he said
Donald Trump’s “Make America Safe Again” campaign hits home with Haynes. "I believe that this election is crucial to the safety of not only our country but our county as well. The lack of border control by the Democratic Party has allowed more fentanyl to flood our streets than ever before, and we are seeing that right here in Rutherford County,” he said. Haynes' campaign is driven by his belief that his law enforcement background provides valuable insights into public safety and governance. “The only way to ensure that we avoid the inevitable danger that the Democratic Party is putting us in is by getting Trump back in office."
While some critics have said during the primary season that serving as both a cop and a commissioner could blur lines of accountability, Haynes is confident that transparency and a clear separation of duties will guide his actions. He envisions a governance model where his law enforcement experience informs policy decisions, particularly in areas of public safety. He has shown he does not shy away from controversial issues and is a staunch advocate for his children, which was evident by a recent public letter about issues with Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy.
Haynes' candidacy represents a potential shift in local politics, where diverse experiences are increasingly seen as assets. As the election approaches, Rutherford County residents are faced with a decision that could redefine local governance: Whether to support a candidate who embodies both law enforcement expertise and a fresh political vision.

Cops & Congress commentary: Why a police officer makes a good lawmaker
In today's complex and often turbulent political landscape, the call for leaders who truly understand the intricacies of public safety has never been louder. Among the diverse backgrounds from which our lawmakers hail, one group stands out as particularly well-equipped to navigate the challenges of contemporary governance: police officers. In my view, you can’t enforce the laws effectively unless you understand the laws. Their unique perspective and hands-on experience with the law and community issues make them exceptionally qualified to serve as lawmakers. Here’s why.
1. Grounded in Reality
Police officers operate on the front lines, dealing with real-life issues that affect everyday citizens. They witness firsthand the effects of legislation and policy on communities. This ground-level perspective ensures that they bring practical, experience-based insights to the legislative process, making laws that are both effective and enforceable. Their daily interactions with citizens give them an intimate understanding of the community’s needs and concerns, allowing them to represent their constituents more accurately and empathetically.
2. Expertise in Public Safety
Public safety is a cornerstone of a stable society, and no one understands this better than those who work in law enforcement. Police officers have extensive training and experience in maintaining public order, preventing crime, and responding to emergencies. As lawmakers, they can craft policies that enhance safety and security, balancing enforcement with community outreach and support. Their expertise ensures that safety-related legislation is comprehensive, addressing root causes while providing effective solutions.
3. Crisis Management Skills
Law enforcement officers are trained to remain calm and make quick, informed decisions in high-pressure situations. These crisis management skills are invaluable in the political arena, where leaders often face urgent and high-stakes decisions. Policymakers with a background in law enforcement can navigate crises with a level-headed approach, ensuring that responses are swift, effective, and grounded in practical reality.
4. Commitment to Justice
At the heart of policing is a commitment to justice and the rule of law. Police officers dedicate their careers to upholding these principles, making them staunch advocates for fair and just legislation. Their experience dealing with the criminal justice system provides valuable insights into how laws are applied and enforced, helping to identify and rectify systemic issues. This commitment ensures that they push for laws that promote equity, protect rights, and serve the common good.
5. Building Trust and Community Relations
Modern policing emphasizes community engagement and building trust between law enforcement and the public. Officers skilled in these areas bring a wealth of knowledge about fostering positive community relations to the legislative process. They understand the importance of communication, transparency, and accountability, applying these principles to governance. Their experience in community policing can help bridge divides and build consensus, fostering a more cooperative and inclusive political environment.
6. Ethical Standards and Accountability
The rigorous ethical standards and accountability measures inherent in law enforcement translate well into the legislative arena. Police officers are accustomed to operating under strict codes of conduct and facing significant scrutiny. This background promotes a high level of integrity and responsibility in their role as lawmakers, ensuring that they remain committed to serving their constituents ethically and transparently.
7. Addressing Root Causes
Police officers understand that many issues, such as crime, substance abuse, and mental health crises, are symptoms of deeper societal problems. Their hands-on experience equips them with the knowledge to address these root causes through comprehensive and thoughtful legislation. They can advocate for policies that provide support and resources to vulnerable populations, aiming to prevent issues before they escalate.
In my view, the unique skills and experiences that police officers bring to the table make them exceptionally well-suited for legislative roles. Their grounded perspective, expertise in public safety, crisis management skills, commitment to justice, ability to build trust, high ethical standards, and understanding of root causes all contribute to their effectiveness as lawmakers. As we look for leaders who can navigate the complexities of modern governance, police officers offer a blend of practical experience and principled leadership that is both rare and invaluable. In an era where public safety and community well-being are paramount, the insight and dedication of those who have served on the front lines of law enforcement can lead to a more just, secure, and harmonious society.
